Your tags on this one though! I think about it all the time! Like I don’t/can’t imagine Artemis without scars. After all shed been through ya know?
Ugh, this. And actually, for the pic I just drew - I meant to put in scars, for accuracy and all that, but then was too lazy >.< I kinda wanna kick myself in the face for it though, because I wish more artists WOULD show how scarred they are - at least the non-meta ones.
I Think it’s fine for the pic you drew since its AU and everything, but I agree. I mean, these heroes are injured all the time, bruises and scars are a big part of the lifestyle and sometimes I think not showing them betrays the characters a bit
Pfffffff, Goil, your picture was lovely just the way it was. Although I do love to see Artemis with scars, I think that, in that picture, it might have been a distraction more than anything; the colors and the tone of the picture, along with the fact that (I think?) we were supposed to noticed their expressions more than anything—the way Dick was looking at Artemis, and the way Artemis was so into her work and the case that her face was twisting with just the thought that these idiots believed they could surpass her, ha!
The way you did that image was glorious, just as it is.
On the general side of things, though, I always picture Artemis crawling with scars, ‘cause like you said, Savvy, after all she’s been through, there’s bound to be some somewhere.
And I don’t think she’d be self-conscious about them until she started seeing people like Zatanna and Rocket and Babs and Black Canary, who all have clearer, unmarked skin; theirs isn’t perfect, because heroing isn’t exactly clean and safe, but nobody has the thick, puckered types of scars she does—a bullet wound in her shoulder; lash marks on her back; knife wounds on her arms and legs and abdomen; warped skin from a burn mark on her hip/thigh where she didn’t jump fast enough; scarred-to-hell knuckles from getting in fights, maybe one hiding in her hairline from when some psycho tried to cut her face, etc. etc. etc.
Sometimes I spend far too much time thinking on this, seriously. I just always wonder what she’s got under her clothes because her costume, despite the fact that it shows off her midriff, doesn’t allow for a lot of exposed skin; it covers her neck, her pants are long and dark, her boots cover what her pants don’t, and she’s got those gloves that cover her hands all the way up to near her elbow, among other things. Plus, with her history, there’s got to be some nasty ones hiding somewhere with some serious history behind them.
Admittedly, the scars I think of her having tend to change with my mood / the story I’m writing. I have a few that stay consistent, but otherwise I always seem to change her history, even just the tiniest bit, with every story that I write (in my head or otherwise). It’s nice to see a bunch of different scenarios that might or might not fit.
That’s how I felt about the pic!
And almost exactly how I feel about the scars! I definitely agree that she didn’t feel ridiculously self conscious until she saw BC and Zatanna and Rocket who , while they may have bumps and scratches, it’s no where bad as Artemis’s. i can see her thinking that she wouldnt have to hide them then realizing hers were much worse than anyone elses. i mean this girl was being trained by her dad at the age of 9 and we all know he wasn’t afraid to mark her up. Plus the missions he sent her on as well as the missions with the team and patrol etc Like I see her always wearing hoodies and long sleeves at school so no one calls the authorities. And I think Dick sees the excessiveness of her scars one day at the cave or school and even his eyes widen a little because of course he has his fair share of them but hers are deep and just make you wince looking at them. And maybe he starts watching her more and finally she asks him what the hell he’s looking at and he just says you and that would be when she realizes the scars weren’t something to hide, they were what made her stronger. That was ramblyy idk
No worries about rambling—sometimes you guys are seriously going to have to tell me to shut it otherwise I’ll go on forever, haha.
YES! Like, she’s still not really ashamed or self-conscious about them—they’re who she is, how she got to be so skilled, they’re pieces of her and they tell a story. But the other girls’ skin isn’t so discolored or puckered or scarred and she still thought it was okay, it’s normal, she’s just been doing this stuff longer and she went above and beyond when she was working with her dad, trying to make him proud. She thought it was normal until she saw BC; she thought for sure she’d have some bigger / deeper / more ragged scarring, but it didn’t turn out like that at all. Add in the fact that the other girls / the guys on the Team / the mentors or the Leaguers would flinch and bitch and sympathize with their injuries, when Artemis was just like, “Knife wound to my thigh, and I ain’t even walkin’ with a limp, no need for medical, byeee~!” Or, “I can stitch this up myself, it’s okay.”
And good lord, I love that bit you wrote with Dick being shocked / horrified that she went through so much, and then it turns all fluffy and ugh. <3
That was a very nice image to have in my head, is all I’m saying.
Lol “knife in my thigh not even limping”
But thank you for saying that about my mini headcanon!
I really think the idea of Artemis’s scars is something to play around with in fics, art, etc and something to keep in mind when considering her character! EDIT: I forgot to mention! I bet someone says something about stitching herself up all the time and she gets all snappy and storms off to the meg because hello shes bleeding and Dick follows her and she opens up about having to fix herself to finish missions for her dad and after rough training sessions etc and she gains so much respect and soon he starts asking her to treat his wounds and eventually she lets him do hers because she trusts him that much
LATE TO THE PARTY, TOO MUCH FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Oh, there we go. I was trying to remember why I didn’t consider putting scars in when I usually do, but as you guys said - I feel like it would have been distracting from the mood and focus of the picture? Scars are so angsty. Ok now I don’t feel guilty about not putting them on there, cause it would be… slightly awkward.
But hmmm… lots of food for thought here. She’s got to have plenty of scars, though now I’m curious as to who has more - her or Dick? I’m betting Sportsmaster wasn’t as careful with her as Batman was with Dick, and that he probably saw injuries as lessons as opposed to failure to be safe with Dick. So I’d bet Artemis DOES have more, and guh, that little bit about Dick seeing her and being like ‘woa’ was just… wibbling. I bet Dick has seen Bruce’s plenty of times and so associates them with strength and hard work, and so he’s not ashamed of his at all, except maybe in moments where they’re signs of not having been good enough (that boy just can’t handle not living up to Bruce’s expectations). and I bet to a certain extent he was proud of them in front of the rest of the team because it meant that he’s gone through a lot of experiences even though he’s the youngest, so to him they’re almost like badges of experience. So then he sees Artemis’s scars, and his respect for her goes WAY up because damn, she’s got even more than his, and that means she might have gone through even more experiences than him.
Oh, I love that idea of her having been okay with them until she started hanging out with Zatanna and Rocket and M’gann though. Because I imagine that Artemis kinda lived in a rough neighborhood as a kid, with maybe some bullies or gangs around or just ‘tough’ kids - her scars were probably things to be proud of in her childhood, things that either made her fit in with her family, or showed that she wasn’t supposed to be fucked with among kids in her neighborhood, and really only to be hidden from authorities (teachers, etc) because her parents warned her it’d bring unwanted attention to their family. So she was probably kinda proud of them at first and displayed them like gang symbols - status and respect.
I also imagine that Artemis probably didn’t really hang out with girls like Zatanna and M’gann (and I’d include Rocket, but honestly, with how little Rocket was around, I’m reluctant to include her in any analyses), girls who were nicer and came (or acted like they came) from more well-to-do families or ‘normal’(ish, I mean, normal is all relative in this show) backgrounds. I base this on the way she acted when she first came into the team - immediately at the defensive, and marking her territory so to speak, both with Wally and then with flirting with Conner. I mean, when M’gann asked her if she always had to be that difficult, Artemis responded with ‘Where I come from, that’s how you survive’. So I’m betting it was shocking for Artemis to realize that with M’gann and Zatanna, her scars weren’t seen as status symbols or something proud - but maybe something jarring or pitiful or scary. And maybe for a moment, especially going to Gotham Academy where she had to be even more careful that authorities, and now classmates, didn’t see her scars, she was maybe jealous of their perfect skin. Artemis may tell herself she’s one of a kind, separate, different, but I think she craves belonging and fitting in, and at some point it was probably painful to look in the mirror and realize that was NEVER going to happen, at least at school.
Omg, and YES, that idea about her finally letting Dick treat her is precious - someone had a similar headcanon, with Artemis only trusting Dick to treat her because he was the only human who wouldn’t judge her if she winced or something, because the other metas wouldn’t understand (which, granted is kinda the opposite of them sympathizing with every little thing while she’s like, knife wound so what, but i love both ideas, maybe it depends on the extent of the injury, or maybe she pretends it doesn’t hurt except because they’re all metas and they can handle more and so her pride won’t let her until she’s around Dick and then she admits it hurts like a bitch). But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of Dick going to Artemis for HIS injuries because he respects her skills with stitching and all that. I imagine that Dick knows basic first aid because Bruce wouldn’t have it any other way, but I’m also betting that he actually doesn’t have THAT much experience with it because it’s generally Alfred that stitches them up.
… okay, now I’M the one who rambled on. Whoops.
Sorry for intruding but…I think Dick and Artemis would initially be a little wary of talking about their scars and the stories that go along with them. Though I think that initial weariness would last an extremely short time because I imagine they’d resort to humor and wisecracks in order to smooth the tension and the severity of the situation. Dick would probably be the first with some lame variant of “I know this one looks bad but I swear it was the clothes iron” and Artemis would just have to roll her eyes and chuckle and add on to the conversation with her scar stories.
I can really just see it clearly in my mind. Dick and Artemis taking a break post-training session in the Cave just the two of them. They’re sitting on a bench or a mat drinking water and looking like sweaty disheveled maniacs on an adrenaline high. Dick’s probably in sweatpants (alternately taking of his shirt in order to show the scars that go along with whatever tale he’s regaling), Artemis probably isn’t that modestly dressed either for the occasion. And they’re just laughing and making fun of each other when they’re really bonding over stunted scarred childhoods and the fact that they’re humans fighting alongside metas and fighting against meta villains.
Hugging would also be involved. But since YJ!Dick is less likely to express affection through physical constant freely than comics!Dick the hug would be of the variety where you chase your friends in a teasing manner in order to annoy them. Artemis would huff and pretend to be annoyed “What was in that water bottle of yours, Boy Wonder?” while Dick is clearly passing this off with a fake emotional (but not really) “Oh poor Artemis needs love come here be my friend ABLOO BLOO BOO”.
I think accidentally headcanon’d and semi-fic’d
Help
Hahaha, no, that’s such a cute scene! And i agree, i think that letting the scars be seen is one thing, but i don’t think they’d freely talk about most of them - maybe the really silly ones, or maybe making up stories about some of the more serious ones, but I doubt they’d go into detail. And I love the idea of Artemis and Dick kinda opening up to each other and trading stories, but making light of them because heck, they don’t need to go into an angstfest about them, but they both know that ‘oh, it was just a knife scratch, hate it when they zig and you zag, you know?’ really means it was a dire situation, you misread the enemy’s move and got injured, somehow still had to win that fight, or worse, be rescued from that fight, and then spent several days favoring that leg and checking for infection every night, sleeping badly because the ache would wake you up in the middle of the night.
